Stack-n-Rotate Candle Holder

Exploratory product design project created for OCAD U's 1st-year Design of Everyday Things course.

Using Adobe Illustrator and laser-cutting

Fabrication Method

By using Adobe Illustrator software, a file was designed defining the definitions and sizes of various C-shaped rings. This document was then submitted to the Rapid Prototyping Centre at OCAD University, where it was translated into a laser-cutting machine and through a 1/4 inch sheet of wood.

Functions & Features

The wooden pieces were glued into 3-piece components that comfortably nest inside each other, becoming stackable, and rotatable

The rotating function controls the direction of light emitted through the gap in the C-shaped rings.

The stacking function allows the user to customize the height (number of pieces) of the candle holder, thus changing the look.

These two functions also protect the candle from wind. By stacking pieces high enough to cover flame and rotating the gap away from direction of wind, this candle holder becomes outdoor ready!
